African American National Biography, accessed February 18, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Larkin, Milton; jazz musician, bandleader; born 10 October 1910 in Navasota, Texas, United States; attended Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston, among the largest black secondary schools in the nation; played with Chester Boone's orchestra (1934-1936); formed his own band (by late 1936); the band had worked the West Coast and New York (by 1942); the Milton Larkin Orchestra was booked to play in Chicago at the prestigious Rhumboogie Club (1942); drafted into the US Army (1943); performed with the Army Band; reformed his orchestra (1946); was frequently in New York City (late 1940s-the 1970s); was a founding member of the influential Harlem-based entertainment fraternity The Copasetics (1949); album “Down Home Saturday Night” by Milt Larkin & His All Stars appeared on the Copasetic label (1976); moved back to Houston (1977); died 31 August 1996 in Houston, Texas, United States)
