He also performed as a bandleader during the 1950s and '60s, most notably on the 1963 album Viva Valdés. Born in Havana, Cuba, on March 23, 1910, he moved to New York in 1956. Besides being the father of pianist/arranger/music director Alfredo "Alfredito" Valdés, Jr., he is the brother of singer/bandleader Vicentico Valdés and percussionist Oscar Valdés; his wife, singer/guitarist Ana María Purmuy, was a member of the all-women Orquesta Anacaona. |
