Biography/History noteMaría Luisa Sepúlveda Maira (1892-1958) was a Chilean composer, pianist and music educator. Born in Chillán, she studied piano and composition at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Santiago, from which she was the first woman composer to graduate (in 1918). She taught there from 1912 to 1931. She pioneered the compilation, study, and research of Chilean folk music, and is the only woman composer whose works are considered part of the Chilean nationalist movement. She also taught harmony and folklore at the Escuela Vocacional de Educación Artística in Santiago. She died in Santiago.
