Since 2002, Knaak works mainly as a composer, including for ZDF and Arte. He created music for the silent films The tired Death (1921) by Fritz Lang and Madame Beudets sunny smile (1922) by Germaine Dulac. He also composed several major works for the stage: Quo Vadis (2005, Theater Trier) or The Secret of Colliers (2007, Theater Regensburg))
