In 1973 he moved to the US, where he gained a science degree at the University of California and a PhD in exercise physiology at Washington State University before moving to Dallas, Texas, in 1981. There he became director of the Human Performance Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, concentrating mostly on sports fitness and becoming one of the most respected experts in his field. He did not leave the university until the age of 75.
