Russian military leader, descendant of the Persian dynasty that ruled the Nakhichevan Khanate. He graduated from the Corps of Pages and was released as a cornet in the Life Guards Cavalry Regiment (1883). He took part and distinguished himself in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, commander of the 2nd Dagestan Cavalry Regiment, three times served as commander of the Caucasian Cavalry Brigade, in which the regiment operated, and was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th degree (1907). Commander of the 44th Dragoon Regiment of Nizhny Novgorod (1905–1906), aide-de-camp (1906), commander of the Life Guards Cavalry Regiment (1906–1911), major general, enlisted in the Retinue of His Imperial Majesty (1907). In 1911, at the disposal of the commander-in-chief of the guard troops and the St. Petersburg Military District, commander of the 1st separate cavalry brigade (1912–1914), lieutenant general (1914), commander of the 2nd cavalry division (1914), in August 1914 commanded cavalry group as part of the 1st Army of General P.
