Attended Cumberland College in Princeton, Ky. Worked on his farm in Eddyville, Ky. and at the Livingston iron forge. In 1844 he was admitted to the bar and began a successful law practice, which he abandoned in 1851. He served in the state Senate in 1854 and was elected to the state House of Representatives 1856-1860. On September 22, 1872, Machen was appointed to fill the U. S. Senate seat where he served until March 3, 1873. Died in Hopkinsille, Ky. September 29, 1893.) |
