Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 598 (Willis Benson Machen, iron manufacturer, soldier and politician, born April 10, 1810 in Caldwell (now Lyon) County, Ky. Attended Cumberland College in Princeton, Ky. Worked on his farm in Eddyville, Ky. and at the Livingston iron forge. In 1844 he was admitted to the bar and began a successful law practice, which he abandoned in 1851. He served in the state Senate in 1854 and was elected to the state House of Representatives 1856-1860. On September 22, 1872, Machen was appointed to fill the U. S. Senate seat where he served until March 3, 1873. Died in Hopkinsille, Ky. September 29, 1893.)
