Double exposure, 2018: title page (Marianne Nicholson) page 16 (Marianne Nicolson--Ḱanḱagawí (the seam of heaven); trained as a photographer (BA, MA, MFA) and linguist (PhD); her practice embraced traditional forms such as ceremonial regalia and painted screens; has expanded to include multimedia paintings, light installations that incorporate lens-based images, and monumental glass sculptures. As a Dzwada̲'enux̲w First Nation woman, she often expresses deep connections to her home territories of Kingcome Inlet, British Columbia (Gwa-yi), by incorporating the Kwaḱwala language; Growing up as a bicultural person (she is part Scots), moving between her village and the colonial city of Victoria, B.C., Nicolson questions how to come to terms with these different ways of being)
Wikipedia, August 10, 2018 (Marianne Nicolson ('Tayagila'ogwa; born 1969) is a Dzawada'enuxw visual artist, whose work explores the margins at which public access to First Nations artifacts clashes with the preservation of indigenous cultural knowledge. Born in Comox, British Columbia, she was trained by a master carver in traditional Kwakwaka'wakw design in the early 1990s. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 1996, and studied at the University of Victoria, graduating with a Masters in Fine Arts in 1999, a Masters in Linguistics and Anthropology in 2005, and a PhD in Linguistics and Anthropology in 2013. She also studied the Kwak'wala language and directed research investigating the link between indigenous language and indigenous worldview. She utilizes painting, photography, mixed-media, sculpture, and installation to create modern depictions of traditional Kwakwaka'wakw beliefs, and has exhibited in Canada and throughout the world since 1992)
