Dictionary of African Biography, accessed March 13, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Mutola, Maria Lurdes; track and field athlete, philanthropist; born 27 October 1972 in Maputo, Mozambique; at 15, she represented Mozambique in the 800-meter race at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea; moved to Springfield, Oregon, in 1991 with an Olympic Solidarity Scholarship to train with Margo Jennings; finished first in the 1992 IAAF World Cup in Havana; undefeated in fifty finals, including at the 1993 Indoor World Championships, the 1993 World Championships, and the 1993 Grand Prix Final; won the gold in Sydney (2000); named to Track and Field News' Top 10 list eight times, won the IAAF jackpot and voted Athlete of the Year (2003); as of 2011 Mutola held the 1000-meter indoor world record (2:30.94, Stockholm, 25 February 1999), the 1000-meter African record (2:29.34), and has held others (World 1000-meter and African 800-meter); established the Lurdes Mutola Foundation in Maputo; the United Nations appointed her as an honorary youth ambassador (2003); became an ambassador for the Lusophony Games (2009))
