He entred Duke University in 1936 and was drafted by the NFL's Chicago Bears in 1940. Served in the Navy 1942-1945. A football injury kept him out of playing in 1946, but returned to play 1947-1950.)

After retirement, moved to Durham and he and his brother, Wes, started the McAfee Oil Company, a Shell oil distributor. Developed dementia and moved into Cypress Court, an assisted living facility specializing in Alzheimer's and memory care in Decatur, Georgia. In February 2009, McAfee suffered chemical burns after drinking a toxic substance that had not been properly locked up in the facility and died from a result of this.)
