Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992: page 206 (Earle Chester Clements born October 22, 1896 in Morganfield, Ky.; studied agriculture at the University of Kentucky until 1917 when he enlisted in the infantry; worked in Texas oil fields; returned to Kentucky to coach high school football; served as deputy sheriff, then as sheriff (1922-1926); county clerk (1926-1934) and county judge (1934-1942). Served as Thomas Rhea's campaign chairman for his campaign for governor in 1935; elected to Kentucky state senate in 1941; majority leader in 1944 and elected to U.S. House of Representatives 1945-1948. Became governor of Kentucky in 1947, serving there until his resignation November 27, 1950 due to his winning the election for U.S. Senate where he served until January 3, 1957. Died March 12, 1985, buried in Morganfield, Ky.)
