Graduated from West Kentucky College in Mayfield, Ky. in 1896; taught school and was school superintendent in Mayfield. Studied law at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee and was admitted to the bar in 1902. Returned to Mayfield where he practiced law, worked as county surveyor, county judge, and US attorney for the Western District of Kentucky. A Democrat, served as a representative to Congress March 4, 1927 to October 10, 1936, the day he died.)
