Journal of special education, Winter 1976: volume 10, number 4, page 332-333 (Harold Manville Skeels; born March 8, 1901 in Denver; grew up in the small towns of northern Iowa; graduated from Iowa State College, now Iowa State University, with a degree in animal husbandry and received a Ph. D. in child development in 1932; from 1932 to 1942, he held joint appointments with the Child Welfare Research Station and the Iowa Board of Control of State Institutions; was responsible for a large number of studies which used institutional populations as subjects; served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946; in 1949, he joined the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Institute of Mental Health, where he served until his retirement in 1965; his major concerns in his work were community mental health, program evalutaion, and the impact of mental retardation on the community; died March 28, 1970 and was buried in an Iowa country churchyard)
