February 1892 in Miramar); Austrian naval officer and polar explorer; joined navy 1 May 1861; took part in the naval battle of Lissa, 20 July 1866; as officer of steamer Elisabeth, in 1866-1868 traveled from Trieste to Sacrificios Island, Mexico, and back on unsuccessful mission to evacuate Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian (Emperor Maximilian) from Mexico, and in 1869 joined with Austrian imperial court in voyage to the Levant to dedicate the Suez Canal; from 1868, employed at Hydrographisches Institut, Pola [Pula, Croatia]; in 1872-1874, took part in Österreichisch-Ungarische Nordpolarexpedition as second officer of the expedition's ship Admiral Tegetthoff; when the ship became trapped in ice, he was responsible for soundings and marine temperature measurements and also recorded meteorological observations; during exploration of Franz Josef Land, which the expedition had discovered, he was one of three people to reach its northernmost point Cape Fligely; awarded the Order of the Iron Crown Third Class, October 1, 1874, which gave him the right to apply for the status of heriditary nobility; appointed steward of Castle Miramare, 1877, with responsibility also for Lacroma Island [Lokrum Island, Croatia]; devoted spare time to painting, mostly themes from the polar expedition)
