| Biography/History note | Estêvão Rodrigues de Castro was born in Lisbon on November 18, 1559. Rodrigues de Castro earned his degree in medicine from the University of Coimbra on October 26, 1588. He practiced medicine in Lisbon until 1608 when he left for Italy. He settled in Florence, Italy, by 1610 and became court physician & professor at the University of Pisa. He wrote numerous scientific and medical works, earning a reputation as one of the foremost medical authorities of his time. Rodrigues de Castro died on June 30, 1638, and was buried at the Franciscan Church of Ognissanti in Florence, Italy. Rodrigues de Castro's life and works are presented in detail in the 1967 work, Estêvão Rodrigues de Castro.
