Biography/History noteBenjamin Franklin Goodrich was born in Ripley, New York on November 4, 1841. At the age of 17, he attended the Medical School of Western Reserve College in Cleveland. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army with the 9th New York Cavalry. He received is medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania during the War. He transferred to the Medical Corps at age 19 and was appointed assistant surgeon in the Army of the United States.After the War he returned to New York and practiced medicine before going into the real estate business with a partner.In 1869 he and his partner traded real estate valued at $10,000 for stock in the small Hudson River Rubber Company at Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. In 1870 he moved the business to the Ohio Canal in Akron and renamed the business 'Goodrich, Tew & Company. Renamed his company 'B.F. Goodrich & Company in 1875. With failing health he retired to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he died on August 8, 1888 at age 46.

Goodrich & Company in 1875; in 1888; he retired to Colorado Springs, Colo.; on August 8, 1888 he died there of a hemorrhage at age 46)
