African American National Biography, accessed January 16, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Charles, Ezzard Mack; boxer, soldier; born 07 July 1921 in Lawrenceville, Georgia, United States. He won the Amateur Athletic Union's national middleweight title; turned professional (1940); served in U.S. Army (1944-1945). He challenged Jersey Joe Walcott for the vacant National Boxing Association heavyweight championship and won (1949), and defeated Louis for the world heavyweight championship (1950). His two fights with Marciano ended his days as a top fighter (1954), however, he fought on until 1959, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. He died 28 May 1975 in Chicago, Illinois, United States)
