Biography/History note | James Preston Kem (b. April 2, 1890, Macon, Missouri-d. February 24, 1965, Charlottesville, Va.), was a U.S. senator. He attended the Blees Military Academy, then graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1910. He graduated from Harvard Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1913, and commenced practice in Kansas City, Missouri, shortly thereafter. During the First World War he served in the infantry from 1917 to 1919, then resumed the general practice of law in Kansas City, after the war. He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1946, serving from January 3, 1947, to January 3, 1953. He ran for reelection unsuccessfullly in 1952. After his time in the senate, he resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C., until retirement in 1961. He resided at Sherwood, in The Plains, Virginia, where he engaged in the breeding of Angus cattle. He died in Charlottesville, Virginia, on February 24, 1965, and was buried in Emmanuel Episcopal Church Cemetery in Middleburg, Virginia. |
