Down; died 30 Jan. 1872 at Packolet, Ballyardle, near Kikeel; army officer and explorer; commissioned in Royal Artillery in 1804; in 1830 began to explore overland routes to India for British government, studying the Suez and Syria areas and the Euphrates River; in 1835 proved Euphrates navigable for steam vessels; commanded artillery in Hong Kong 1843-1847; upon return to England continued to advocate for the Euphrates route)
