Washington place names, via WWW, July 9, 2014 (Monse is a small community northeast of Brewster north of the Columbia River in south central Okanogan County. Its first name was Swanson [no publications or access points in OCLC], which later was altered to Swansea [no publications or access points in OCLC]. On October 24, 1916, during WWI, citizens changed it to the present name in commemoration of the first clash between British and German armies during World War One. Overwhelmed by superior numbers the allied army was forced to retreat being covered by a series of counter attacks which became known as the Battle of Mons in Belgium. The final e was added in error.
