Schmincke Web site history, September 3, 2014 (Schmincke, Feinste Künstlerfarben; H. Schmincke & Co., has its origin in the later 19th century, when the two chemists, Hermann Schmincke and Josef Horadam, began their search for traditional recipes for the finest artists' resin oil colors. In 1881, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, they discovered Professor Cesare Mussini's formulas. On the basis of these special recipes, the two chemists founded their factory in Düsseldorf that same year. In 1892, following extensive research, the company founders patented their finest watercolors. The later generation of owners expanded the company throughout the 20th century to one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-quality artists' colors)
