Dictionary of Canadian Biography/Dictionnaire biographique du Canada, XV (1921-1930), online version, Oct. 30, 2014: (Fielding, William Stevens: b. 24 Nov. 1848 in Halifax; d. 23 June 1929 in Ottawa; in 1864, at 16, obtained employment with the Halifax Morning chronicle, and was managing editor from 1874-1884; as Nova Scotian correspondent for the Toronto Globe for 14 years; in 1879, helped found the Young Men's Liberal Club in Halifax; in June 1882 contested the provincial constituency of Halifax County and won; two years later succeeded William Thomas Pipes as premier of Nova Scotia; founding member of the Maritime Provinces Liberal Association; appointed finance minister by Wilfrid Laurier in 1896, ended with the defeat of the Liberal Party in 1911; again appointed finance minister in the first government of William Lyon Mackenzie King, 1921-1925; retired from government in 1925; died in 1929)
