Biography/History noteThe University of Malta (1980- ) was originally founded as the College of the Society of Jesus in 1592 in Valletta, Malta. In 1769 it became the University of Malta and in 1937 the Royal University of Malta. In 1976 the name University of Malta was resumed. In 1978, it split into the New University and the Old University. In 1980, the Old and New Universities merged to once again form the University of Malta.

Berg, Warren G., 1924- Historical dictionary of Malta. 1995, viewed through Google Books, April 14, 2015: p. 128 (Then, in the 1978 amendments of the Education Act, the Faculties of Engineering and Architecture, Medicine and Surgery and Dental Surgery were transferred to the College of Arts, Science and Technology (called the Polytechnic)... It was renamed the "New University"; The Faculty of Theology was transferred to the Archbishop's Seminary at Tal Virtu, Rabat. The remaining Faculties of Arts, Science and Laws were given the name of "The Old University." Another amendment in 1980 caused the suppression of the Faculties of Arts and Science, while Law was transferred to the "New University," which then became "The University of Malta.")

In 1978 the Polytechnic of Malta together with the Faculties of Engineering and Architecture, Medicine and Surgery, and Dental Surgery, transferred from the University of Malta, and formed the New University.The Faculties of Arts, Science and Law remained at the University of Malta, renamed the Old University. On the 28th March 1980 the two universities resumed again the name of University of Malta)
