He was 97. John Edward Patty was born in Fort Smith, Ark., on Feb. 11, 1924. The nickname Budge came from his older brother, who quipped that Mr. Patty scarcely displayed much urgency and therefore wouldn't "budge." Mr. Patty lived for more than 70 years in Europe)
