Was forced to leave school and apprenticed to a textile merchant in the bazaar in Tehran at age 13; arrived penniless in Manchester in 1950 and started a textile business; married Alma Joseph on June 15, 1955 but later divorced; acquired Thomas Hoghton in 1956 and went on to acquire other textile companies and mills; by 1960 he was a millionaire and employed tens of thousands of workers; owner of a mail order company M. Brown Group; married Homa Alliance in 1982; bought Carrington Viyella in 1983; was chief executive of Vantona Viyella in the mid-1980s and became the biggest textile manufacturer in the Western world reviving the dying textile industry in Great Britain; participated in Operation Moses in the late 1970s and Operation Solomon that brought 30,000 Jews from Ethiopia to Israel; received many honorary degrees and was knighted in 1983 for his work in the textile industry; was appointed CBE [Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire] in 1984; was made a peer in 2004; divides his time between London, Manchester, and Tel Aviv)
