Biography/History noteKazimierz Cardinal Świątek was born October 21, 1914 in Valga, the Russian Empire, and died July 21, 2011 in Pinsk, Belarus. His parents moved to Pinsk, then in Poland, in 1922. He was ordained a priest in 1939. In 1941 he was given a death sentence by the Soviets, and later was sent to the Gulag in Siberia from 1944-1954. In 1954 he returned to his pastoral work in Pinsk, by then in Belarusia, and in 1989 he was elevated to bishop by Pope John Paul II. He was made an archbishop in 1991, and was made a cardinal in 1994.
