Wikipedia, viewed April 21, 2016 (Alar Toomre, born February 5, 1937 in Rakvere, is an Estonian-American astrophysicist and mathematician. He is a professor of applied mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; his research focus is on the dynamics of galaxies and galactic evolutions and mergers. Toomre emigrated to the United States from Rakvere in 1949. He received an undergraduate degree in Aeronautical Engineering and Physics from MIT in 1957; a Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics from the University of Manchester. He taught at MIT for two years, and after a year at the Institute for Advanced Studies, he returned to MIT. He was appointed an Associate Professor of Mathematics at MIT in 1965 and a full Professor in 1970. In 1984 he was a recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship (the "Genius Grant") and in 1993, he received the Dirk Brouwer Award which recognizes "outstanding contributions to the field of dynamic astronomy")
