He is remembered on May 8; born during the latter part of the 3rd century into a Christian family in ancient Maurentania, a Roman province on the Mediterranean coast of north Africa. He was a Berber of the Mauri tribe after which the Moors were named; he became a soldier in the Roman army and advanced through the ranks to become a member of the Praetorian Guard that served Maximian, emperor of the Western Roman Empire 286-305; refusing to sacrifice to the pagan gods, Maximian ordered his beheading in his garden in a small wood called The Elms in Milan on May 8, 303. |
