Biography/History noteDavid Carlebach, son of Solomon and Esther Carlebach, was born 1885, in Lübeck, Germany. In 1904 he attended the University of Berlin (Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin) and simultaneously attended the Rabbiner Seminar zu Berlin. In 1906, he attended the Universität Leipzig where he studied German, French, philosophy and pedagogy. His dissertation, published in 1912, is entitled "Biblische Königsdramamen in der französischen Tragödie des 16. und 17.Jahrhunderts" for which he received a Ph.D. During this period of time, he taught in the "Höhere Israelitische Schule" (Leipzig), a yeshiva founded by his brother Ephraim Carlebach. David Carlebach also served as a private tutor in Halberstadt. He died in Halberstadt of appendicitis in 1913 and was laid to rest in the Beth-Olam cemetery located in Moisling, Lübeck.

Die Carlebachs : eine rabbinerfamilie aus Deutschland, 1995: page 23, etc. (David Carlebach, son of Solomon and Esther Carlebach, was born 1885, in Lübeck, Germany. In 1904 he attended the University of Berlin (Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin) and simultaneously attended the Rabbiner-seminar. Afterwards, from 1906, in Leipzig he studied German, French, philosophy and pedagogy. His dissertation in 1912 [entitled] "Biblische Königsdramamen in der französischen Tragödie des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts" followed a year later by his rabbinical exam. Shortly thereafter, the young scholar succumbed to the effects of surgery. David died in 1913 and was laid to rest in the “Moisling” Jewish cemetery.
