German Wikipedia, Nov. 2, 2017 (Volker Schmidt; full name: Volker Karl Hermann Schmidt; also known as Rethra-Schmidt; born June 26, 1942, Burg Stargard; died April 2, 2002, Neubrandenburg; German archaeologist; studied dentistry at the University of Greifswald but was expelled for participating in protests associated with the Prague Spring; worked as a dental technician with archaeology as a hobby, then became a research assistant at the Stadtmuseum Neubrandenburg, where he advanced to being the department head for archaeology; degree in history from Universität Halle, 1977; Ph. D., Humboldt-Universität Berlin, 1984; became head of the Historisches Bezirksmuseum Neubrandenburg in 1990, which later became the Regionalmuseum Neubrandenburg; it was discovered in the early 1990s that he had been an unofficial employee of the Ministry of State Security [Stasi])
