Black papers, 1862-1927 (George Adolph Black was born in 1841; by 1862 he was living in Freeport, Illinois; during the Civil War he served in the 45th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers; Black would eventually be appointed to work with the territorial government in Utah; he appears to have worked closely with John Wilson Shaffer in 1870; in November 1870 Black was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to serve as the Secretary of Utah Territory under Governor Vernon H. Vaughan; Vaughan only served four months until February 1871; at this time, Black served as acting governor until July 1871, when George Lemuel Woods was appointed as governor, and Black again served as secretary; Black would continue to serve under two more governors (Samuel B. Axtell and George W. Emery) until 1876; George A. Black died in 1914)
