In June 1943, when his tale really begins, Pino was seventeen, and trying to survive the intense bombardment that the Allies inflicted on Milan because it was one of the last industrial bases available to the Axis powers. One of the underground railroad's (for escaping Jews) tracks led through a Catholic boy's school high in the Alps where Pino Lella and others were sent to wait out the bombing. A courageous priest ran the school and organized escapes over the top of the Alps. The boys were the guides. In 1944, Pino returned to Milan. He became a spy for the Italian resistance within the German High Command.)
