| Biography/History note | It is our painful duty to record the death of Baron Louis Lederer, Consul General for the Austrian States. His death took place on the 22d of December, 1842, at his residence in New York. Baron Lederer has been for many years a resident in this country, and has been long known as a zealous mineralogist ... His collection of foreign minerals was purchased three or four years since by the University of Michigan, and his collection of American specimens in mineralogy, which is believed to be unique in its fullness was offered by him for sale just before his death. Previous to this appointment he had been the manager of the English export firm of Strange & Company in Cadiz ... Baron Lederer owned two collections of minerals which were considered to be unique in the United States, one of European specimens and the other of American. In 1836 he decided to sell his European collection ... Some time prior to November 18, 1837, the Regents of the University of Michigan became interested in the collection ... Lederer originally asked for forty-five hundred dollars, but the price was finally set at four thousand ... Shortly after the final payment was made, Baron Lederer offered as a gift to the University a book of "valuable minerals." It was with these specimens, apparently, that he sent the "six volumes of Spanish and German mineralogical works," which constituted the second personal gift to the Library.
