Nieuw Nederlandsch biografisch woordenboek, 1911-1937 (heading: Jager, Herbert de; Orientislist who was born in Zwammerdam in either 1636 or 1637; he initially studied theology at the the University of Leiden but then switched to mathematics and oriental languages; in 1662 he was sent to the East Indies where he was in the employ of the Dutch East India Company and studied botany, astonomy, and the architecture of fortifications; he was then sent to Persia where he was based in the court at Isfahan; in India he studied Telugu, Sanskrit, and Tamil; in 1680, he was transferred to Batavia, now Jakarta in Indonesia where he studied botany extensively; he died in Batavia on January 6, 1694)
