Biography/History note | Ramon Despuig i Martínez de Marcilla (1670-1741) was born in Majorca on June 17, 1670, and at the age of three, he was admitted into the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (Order of Malta) as a young nobleman. As a member of the Order, he served as a Captain of galleys (1695), an extraordinary ambassador to the King of Sicily (1697), Governor of Forte Ricasoli in Malta, Bailiff of Negroponte (1715) and Majorca (1723-1738), and Senescal of the Grand Master (1719). In 1736, he was elected to the sovereign position of Grand Master, in which he served until his death in 1741. |
