Biography/History noteHans Demel (1886-1951) was an Egyptologist, art historian, and university professor. After earning doctorates in law and studying Egyptology, Islamic languages, and archaeology, Demel worked at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien from 1914, and after 8 years managed the Egyptian collection. He made study trips to Egypt and participated in excavacations near Giza, and was elected a member of the Deutschen Archäologischen Institut in 1934. After serving during WWII, he took a teaching position at Universität Wien from 1942 until his death.
