Biography/History note | Marquard Herrgott (1694-1762) was a Benedictine historian, librarian, and diplomat, renowned for his works on the history of the Hapsburg family. After studying in Freiburg and Strassburg, he initially taught the children of a local merchant, following them to Paris for 2 years, before returning to Germany and professing as a Benedictine at Kloster St. Blasien in 1715, where he was ordained in 1718. He furthered his studies as an historical researcher at Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris, and upon his return to St. Blasien was appointed the monastery librarian. He was sent by the Estates of Breisgau to the Viennese court as a diplomat, a long-term position that led to his appointment as the imperial advisor and historiographer by Kaiser Karl VI because of the success of his Genealogia diplomatica augustae gentis Habsburgicae. |
