African American National Biography, accessed December 12 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database: (Davy, Gloria; opera singer; born 29 March 1931 in New York, New York, United States; graduated from the Juilliard School of Music in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree; Between 1958 and 1961performed at the Metropolitan Opera, she became the first African American soprano to be cast in the title role of Verdi's Àˆida; was a professor at Indiana University School of Music (1985 - 1993); she settled in Europe where she felt she would find greater opportunity than was available in the United States,nd it was in Europe that her career developed, propelled, and sustainedl, she performed leading roles in operas at La Scala, at the Theatre de l'opera with an Italian company from Milan (1957), at Covent Garden in London (1960), at the Vienna State Opera at the invitation of Herbert von Karajan (sung in German; 1959), and at the Deutsche Oper (also sung in German) under the direction of Wieland Wagner (1961 - 1969). In Brussels (1961 - 1962); even during Davy's time as a professor at Indiana University School of Music (1985 - 1993), she maintained her residence in Geneva, Switzerland.; died 28 November 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland)
