Russkīĭ bīograficheskīĭ slovarʹ, viewed online 22 December 2021: volume 6, pages 211-213 (Демидовъ, Анатолій Николаевичъ = Demidovʺ, Anatolīĭ Nikolaevichʺ, Russian state councillor, born 1812 in Florence, the younger son of Nikolaĭ Nikitichʺ; died childless 16 April 1870 in Paris: in his youth served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in consulates in Paris, Rome, Vienna; held title Prince of San Donato, given him by the king of Italy; maintained his lavish villa at San Donato; in 1841 married Matilde, the countess Monfort, a niece of Napoleon I; traveled in Italy, Russia, Siberia; established a silk factory in Florence, managed a variety of other industrial enterprises in several locations; sponsored a scientific expedition through Southern Russia and Crimea to investigate possibilities for mining; enjoyed great wealth and collections of art and other rarities, in part inherited from his father; like his father, and with his brother Pavelʺ, a great philanthropist, establishing and endowing charitable and cultural institutions in Russia and Western Europe, where he was well known)
