Moved to Kentucky with his family in 1779 where he attended school in Bardstown and read law in Lexington. He was elected to the Kentucky legislature in 1802. In 1807 he was elected to the U. S. Senate March 4, 1807-March 3, 1813. Served as secretary of state 1816-1819 and served in the Kentucky Senate 1825-1829. Supported his brother in law, John Quincy Adams, for president in 1824. Served as territorial governor of Arkansas in 1829 until 1835. Served in the U.S. House of Representatives March 4, 1837-March 3, 1843. Died at his home in Springfield July 12, 1845.)
