Wikipedia, viewed August 15, 2016 (James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn; KG, PC; born January 21, 1811 at Seymour Place, Mayfair; he was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford; in 1856 he received an honorary doctorate of Civil Laws from the University of Oxford; from 1814-1818 he was styled Viscount Hamilton and from 1818-1868 the Marquess of Abercorn; in 1844 he was made a Knight of the Garter; the same year he became Lord Lieutenant of Donegal; two years later he was appointed a Privy Councillor and Groom of the Stole to Prince Albert; in 1866 he was appointed Viceroy of Ireland and 2 years later he was created Marquess of Hamilton (in the peerage of the UK) and Duke of Abercorn (in the peerage of Ireland); he resigned shortly after Gladstone won the 1868 general election; he was reappointed to the post in 1874 and served as Viceroy until his resignation in 1876; in 1874 he was chosen Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ireland, a post he held until his death; he was Envoy-Extraordinary for the investiture of King Umberto I of Italy with the Order of the Garter in 1878; he was elected Chancellor of the University of Ireland in 1881; died October 31, 1885 at his home of Baronscourt, County Tyrone)
