Studied law under his father, then admitted to the bar and took over his father's prominent law practice there. Elected as a Whig to represent Mercer County in the state Senate 1829-1833. Served in the Kentucky legislature 1835-1839, then filled the seat of Rep. Simeon Anderson as a Congressman. Re-elected to the U.S. House of Represenatives December 7, 1840-1851. Lieutenant governor of Kentucky in 1852, then elected to the U.S. Senate March 4, 1853-March 3, 1859) Died January 7, 1874 in Harrodsburg, Ky.)
