After studying at several universities, he served in the Russian civil service and then at the French embassy in Saint Petersburg. From 1808 to 1824 he taught French literature and Russian history at Tübingen University. He translated the "Primary chronicle" in 1774, and among other works he wrote the two-volume Annales de la Petite-Russie, ou, Histoire des Cosaques-Saporogues et des Cosaques de l'Ukraine, ou de la Petite-Russia in 1788, one of the earliest works in Western Europe on Ukrainian history and geography)

He studied at Strasbourg, Jena, and Leipzig Universities. He also served as an attaché at the French embassy in Saint Petersburg. Amoung his works is the "Annaly Malorosiï" of 1788, which was the first work by a Western-European scholar concerning the geography and history of Ukraine)
