Biography/History note | Johann Holzer (1753-1818) was born in Korneuburg, Austria on May 17, 1753. Best known for his Austrian songs, he was a house composer for the Freimaurerloge Zur wahren Eintracht, the Masonic lodge where Mozart was a member. Although some controversy exists, most scholars agree that Holzer composed the music used since 1947 for the Austrian national anthem, "Land der Berge, Land am Strome." Other surviving works include songs, sonatas for piano with viola and cello, sonatinas for piano and viola, 2 masses, and several trios. Holzer died in Vienna on September 7, 1818. |
