KAOWARSOM [Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences] website, Biographie coloniale belge, 1951, viewed September 6, 2020: pages 928-929 (VANGELE (Alphonse), Vice-Gouverneur général (Bruxelles, 25.4.1848 - 23.2.1939; Vangele; as Lieutenant adjoint d'état-major au 3e de ligne in 1881, he offered his services to the Association Internationale Africaine; assisted in constructing route for transport between Manianga and Léopoldville under direction of Stanley; during expedition under Stanley in 1883, assigned with Coquilhat to construct a post at the equator on the Congo river, named Équateurville and later Coquilhatville; with capitaine Hanssens, discovered the Ubangi river; went to the Falls in December 1884 had several interviews with Tippo-Tip, Arab chief and slave trafficker, on orienting his activity toward honest commerce; charged by Leopold II in late 1886 to explore the Ubangi; did further river exploration in 1887; sent by Leopold II to organize the region of the Ubangi, 1889-1891; after 6 years in Belgium, named Vice-Gouverneur général 1 December 1897, arrived at the Falls 4 March 1898, but due imprecise communications, did not take charge from baron Dhanis until 13 September; obliged to step down 25 October 1898 for health reasons and return the post to Dhanis, went back to Europe January 1899; named lieutenant-colonel, took army pension and put his experience to the service of colonial enterprises; became administrator of Compagnie Bruxelloise du Commerce du Haut-Congo, and commissioner of Compagnie du Kasai, Cotonco, Ciments du Katanga, Minière Aruwimi-Ituri, Safricas, Manucongo, Minière de Luebo, Minière de la Lueta, Kilo-Moto, Banque du Congo belge, etc.; died in Brussels)
