May 10, 1824 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; studied law and commenced practice in 1847; moved to Bloomingburg, N.Y. where he was district attorney, 1850-1856; elected as a Republican from N.Y. to the 36th-37th Congresses, serving March 4, 1859-March 3, 1863; served in the Union army; elected to the 40th Congress (1867/1869) and successfully contested the following election to serve in the 41st Congress, Feb. 17, 1870-Mar. 3, 1871; moved to Nebraska in 1874 and settled on a farm; member of the Nebraska state Senate, 1876-1880; U.S. Senator from Nebraska, 1881-1887; unsuccessful Populist candidate for Gov. of Nebraska in 1892; retired; d. Washington, D.C., Oct. 24, 1895)
