Lawrence Co., Pa., Sept. 2, 1840; taught school in Hocking Co., Ohio; served in Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, and was severly wounded at the Battle of Corinth in 1862; studied law and began practice in New Castle, Pa. in 1867; district attorney, 1868-1871; member commission to codify laws and devise a plan of govt. for cities of Pa. in 1877-1878; Republican Representative to 49th-50th Congresses, 1885-1889; resumed law practice in New Castle, where he died, Feb. 16, 1920)
