Oxford DNB online, 3 November 2017 (Cleghorn, Hugh Francis Clarke (1820-1895), surgeon, naturalist, and forest conservator, was born in Madras on 9 August 1820; after the death of his mother he was sent to Scotland to be brought up by his grandfather, Hugh Cleghorn, who had played a major role in the transfer of Ceylon from Dutch to British control; was an early member of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh, graduating MD in 1841; was nominated to the Madras Presidency in 1842 as an assistant surgeon, where from 1845 to 1847 he was appointed to the Mysore commission; died at Stravithie on 16 May 1895; is best known as a pioneering forest conservator in India)
