German Wikipedia, viewed January 15th, 2024 (Matthias de Vries (born Haarlem, November 9th, 1820, died Leiden, August 9th, 1892) was a Dutch linguist. In 1849 he started working as a professor of National History at the University of Groningen. From 1853 up until 1891 he focused on researching an teaching National History and Dutch Language at Leiden University. His most important work is the first dictionary of the Dutch language (Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal), compiled with Lammert Allard te Winkel (1806-1868) from 1864 to 1882. In 1855 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam. The Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique accepted him as a member in 1863. The Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature made him a member of honor.)
