Dictionary of African biography, accessed December 6, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database (Avila Laurel, Juan-Tomás; poet, dramatist, essayist; born 06 November 1966 in Spanish Cultural Center of Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; pursued a degree in nursing at the Escuela Nacional de Sanidad de Bata (The National School of Health of Bata) and worked as a laboratory technician in a hospital in Valencia, Spain; took the job as an activities coordinator for the Centro Español de Malabo; won first place in the category of essay organized by the Escuela Normal de Magisterio de Bata (Normal School of the Magistrate of Bata) (1980); won first place in the category of theater (1986) and first place in the category of poetry (1990) in contests sponsored by the Centro Cultural Hispano-Guineano de Malabo (Hispano-Guinean Cultural Center of Malabo); won third place in the category of narrative with El desmayo de Judas (Judas Faints) in the XXXV Certamen International Odón Betanzos Palacios (XXXV Odón Betanzos Palacios International Competition) (1999); served as editor-in-chief of Equatorial Guinean literary journal Revista de Cultura y Literatura El Patio (1999-2003) and was named the Joseph Astman Distinguished Faculty Lecturer at Hofstra University (2003); he is considered the most influential Equatorial Guinean author that has chosen not to live in exile)
